Newly elected UP chairman arrested for 'cheating trader'

Police yesterday arrested a newly elected union parishad chairman from the office of deputy commissioner (DC) of Chittagong, where he came to take oath, on charge of allegedly cheating money and a passport out of a fruit trader. The arrestee Mohammed Hossain is the newly elected chairman of Mariam Nagar Union Parishad under Rangunia upazila in Chittagong. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ismail Hossain of Panchlaish Police Station said a fruit trader of Muradpur area filed a case with the police station in September 1. The trader accused Hossain of taking his money and passport, promising to provide visa to a country in the Middle East. Hossain did not return the passport or the money despite the trader's frequent requests, said the OC. Hossain was produced before a Chittagong court in the afternoon where he was ordered to be sent to jail, added the OC.
