Cabinet decides to create fund for artistes
The cabinet yesterday decided to set up a welfare fund under Ministry of Cultural Affairs for the country's artistes.
The decision was taken at the regular weekly cabinet meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters at the PID conference room after the meeting, PM's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said the decision to form the fund came at the prime minister's directive.
Azad said the cabinet meeting also adopted a condolence motion to show respect for Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra's artiste late Ajit Roy.
The cabinet members recalled Ajit's contributions to various democratic movements, including the mass uprising of 1969 and the War of Liberation of 1971.
The cabinet said the loss caused to the nation at Ajit's death is irreparable. It conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family and prayed for salvation of the departed soul.
The cabinet was also informed about a Bangladesh delegation's participation at a ministerial meeting of Developing 8 held in Abuja of Nigeria on July 14, the foreign minister's joining the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation meeting held in Kazakhstan on June 28-30 and State Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud's Australia visit.
