Man executed for killing his wife
A man, sentenced to death for murdering his wife 12 years ago, was executed in Rajshahi Central Jail Sunday night.
Nistar Ali, 48, son of Abdul Aziz of Raghabpur village in Chapainawabganj was executed at 11:00pm, said jailer Faruk Ahmed. Later his body was handed over to his family for burial.
Nistar's execution, scheduled during the month of Ramadan, was shifted to Sunday following a home ministry order, said jail authorities.
Nistar murdered his wife Merina Bibi, 22, around seven months into their marriage by sinking her in the pond on September 15, 1999, says the prosecution story. Her body was recovered two days later while Nistar went into hiding.
Merina's father promised a land to Nistar during the marriage, failing which the couple were living at Merina's brother Muktar's house at Shapahar upazila in Naogaon. Nistar was also frantic when Merina sold off a piece of land she inherited later on.
Muktar filed a case against Nistar with Sapahar Police Station in this connection. On September 14, 2003, the District and Sessions Judge of Naogaon convicted Nistar for the murder and gave him the capital punishment after almost four years of investigation and trial into the case.
The High Court upheld the verdict in 2006. The Appellate Division also upheld the verdict. Nistar's appeal for mercy to the president was rejected July 31 this year.
Executive Magistrate Razzakul Islam, Senior Jail Superintendent Towhidul Islam, Rajshahi Civil Surgeon Shahidul Islam, among others, were present during the execution.
