29 Jamaat men held

Police yesterday arrested over 29 activists and leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami as they vandalised seven vehicles and clashed with the law enforcers leaving five people injured in Chittagong, Barisal, and Kushtia yesterday. Staff correspondent from Ctg reports: Five people including an assistant commissioner of police were injured and at least seven vehicles were vandalised as activists of Jamaat-e-Islami clashed with police at Muradpur intersection in the port city yesterday. Abdul Mannan, assistant commissioner of Panchlaish circle, suffered injuries in the head, said Khulshi Police Station Officer-in-charge Abu Jafor Mohammad Omar Faruk. According to witnesses and police, about 5,000 Jamaat men brought out a procession from Muradpur as part of the party's countrywide protest demanding release of its top leaders. The Jamaat men were engaged in clash and vandalised one car, three buses, and three microbuses as police obstructed them at Muradpur intersection. Police picked up a number of activists of Jammat from the spot but could not provide the exact number of the detainees instantly. Unconfirmed sources, however, said 15 Jamaat activists were detained. Our Barisal correspondent says: Police detained three leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami as they were leading a protest procession in chalk bazar area in the divisional city yesterday. Jamaat city and district units jointly organised the procession as the party's nationwide demonstration. Police also baton-charged the protesting Jamaat activists and leaders, injuring five of them including Barisal city unit secretary Prof Aminul Islam Khasru. Our Kushtia correspondent adds: Police arrested 26 Jamaat men from a procession that was brought out from Kushtia municipality area around 4:15pm.
