The one-member enquiry team formed by the law, justice and parliamentary affairs ministry, probing police torture on Dhaka University student Abdul Kadar, took Kadar's testimony on the incident in the city's Khilgaon Police Station yesterday. Khilgaon police arrested Kadar early hours of July 16 from city's Segunbagicha intersection on charge of attempted robbery and possessing firearms. From seven people wearing plainclothes in the officer-in-charge's room, Kadar was asked to identify the suspended officer-in-charge (OC) Helal Uddin who, according to Kadar, slashed his calf muscle with a cleaver while in police custody. Kadar, a biochemistry and molecular biology student, identified Helal and reiterated that Helal slashed his calf muscle. The probe body Chief Ashis Ranjan, also a joint secretary of law ministry, took a firsthand experience of Kadar on the custody room of Khilgaon Police Station where Kadar was inhumanly tortured by Helal and some other police members. Talking to reporters, Ashis said he will take the testimony of all people concerned in the incident and will also visit Khilgaon Police Station today.
