7 hurt in jute warehouse fire in N'ganj
At least seven people including two firemen were injured while attempting to douse a fire that swept through a jute storehouse in Narayanganj town yesterday.
The fire, which may have been caused by an electrical short circuit, started around 5:00am at the warehouse of Popular Jute Exchange at Nitaiganj Tolaram intersection of the town, said Ahsanul Kabir, deputy director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence Department.
Abul Khair, finance manager of Popular Jute Exchange, told newsmen that 3,500 maunds of jute worth at least Tk 40 lakh were gutted in the fire.
The blaze engulfed the entire warehouse in a few minutes of its origin and caused panic among the neighbouring people, said witnesses.
Three units of firefighters from the town's Mondolpara and Haziganj fire stations rushed to the spot and brought the flames under control after nearly one and a half hour of hectic efforts, said Ahsanul.
Five people and two firemen injured in the inferno were rushed to Narayanganj General Hospital, he said.
