The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday fined a textile washing plant at Mirpur a sum of Tk10.48 lakh for discharging untreated chemical waste into the Turag. A team of DoE led by Mohammad Munir Chowdhury, director (Enforcement) found that Sinha Washing Plant dumped its toxic liquid waste into the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) sewerage instead of using the effluent treatment plant. Each day the factory released around 65,000 cubic litres of liquid wastes which found its way into the river. Earlier on September 12, the team visited the factory and summoned the factory authorities to the DoE office yesterday. The owner would have to pay the fine otherwise the plant would be shut down, DoE source said.
