Bangladesh has reiterated its unwavering commitment to the principles of peace, tolerance and harmony and its pledge to work for the promotion of peace and development around the world. In a message on the eve of the International Day of Peace today, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the world has sadly witnessed the occurrences of wars and regional conflicts that led to war crimes of genocide and crimes against humanity since the inception of the United Nations (UN). There are new threats to international peace and security emanating from acts of terrorism, abject poverty, food insecurity and climate vulnerability, she said. The International Day of Peace reminds us of the necessity to make collective efforts to uproot all these causes of conflicts, instability and uncertainty, she added. The PM said Bangladesh, as a nation, takes its inspiration from the ideal of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman 'friendship to all and malice towards none'. Bangladesh remains committed to the principles of the UN Charter; and since its independence, has been contributing to the realization of these principles to promote global peace, she said. "Our proactive participation in UN peacekeeping missions and our contribution in the development agenda of the UN specially speak for our unflinching commitment to a lasting global peace. We firmly believe that peaceful settlement of all disputes can best be achieved under legitimate and universal mandate of the UN. Similarly, we also believe that peoples' aspirations for better standards of life can be materialized by our collective efforts to establish a fair and just global financial and economic architecture," the PM said. "I also reaffirm our deep commitment to democracy, people's empowerment, human rights and justice all that foster global peace, progress and prosperity for our succeeding generations," she added.
