A team of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) yesterday demolished 115 makeshift structures erected on the Gulshan-Banani Lake in the city to reclaim the land surrounding the lake. The slums torn down also included a school of JAAGO Foundation, an NGO working for slum children's education. The eviction drive, backed by Gulshan police, started around 12:00pm and continued till late afternoon rendering several hundred people homeless. At one stage, the slum dwellers locked in a scuffle with the officials and law enforcers. The land on which the slums were built belongs to the lake, said Rokon-Ud-Dowla, executive magistrate of Rajuk, who led the drive. "We knocked down around 115 bamboo structures encroaching on the lake," he said.
