Regional collaborative mechanisms stressed

Indian Vice-president Md Hamid Ansari has stressed the need for regional collaborative mechanisms and preventive diplomacy to resolve water disputes. He was addressing a function here on Monday after launching a book titled “Water: Asia's New Battlefield.” Indian Council of World Affairs organised the programme. “To be equitable and reasonable should be the underlying principles, on which international disputes can be worked on,” observed Ansari. He also underscored that all sides should be unemotional in resolving water issues. There are 57 river basins in Asia and there have been just four trans-border river water-sharing agreements including the 1996 Ganges water treaty between India and Bangladesh and the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 between India and Pakistan.
