Road crashes kill 5

Five people were killed and three others injured in separate road accidents in Dinajpur, Sylhet, Satkhira and Chittagong yesterday. Our Dinajpur correspondent reports: A three-year-old child and her mother were killed and her father and brother injured critically when their motorcycle collided head-on with a Dinajpur-bound speedy truck on Dinajpur-Dhaka highway in Rangamati area of Phulbari upazila on Tuesday night. The deceased are Selina Pervin, 35, wife of Md Abdur Rouf and their child daughter Raima, 3, of Phulbari town. The injured Md Abdur Rouf, 45, a lecturer of Bangla department of Phulbari Shaheed Smrity Adarsha Degree College and his son Kawshique, 11, were admitted to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital. Agitating locals blocked the highway for three hours following the accident. Police said they arrested the driver and helper of the truck. Staff correspondent from Sylhet says: A college girl was killed and a motorcyclist injured as a speedy truck hit a motorbike on Shaistaganj-Chunarughat road at Durgapur bazar in Habiganj district yesterday afternoon. The deceased is identified as Nishi Akhtar, 17, a student of the Habiganj Sarkari Brindabon College and daughter of Abdur Rahman, of village Bamoi of Lakhai upazila. The injured motorcyclist, Saikat, was admitted to Chunarughat Upazila Health Complex. The truck driver along with his truck fled the scene soon after the accident. Our Satkhira correspondent adds: A primary school teacher was killed on the spot as she was crushed under the wheels of a truck while she was crossing the road in front of National Bank office at village Sultanpur in Satkhira town yesterday. The deceased is Shamsunnahar Begum, 34, an assistant teacher of Khanpur Govt Primary School and wife of Md Fazlul Haque, of Rajarbagan in the town. Police seized the truck but its driver fled away. Staff correspondent from Chittagong adds: A motorcyclist was killed as he lost his control over the motorcycle while he was crossing Manasha roundabout and fell into a roadside ditch at Manashar Tek of Patiya upazila in the port city yesterday. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Shahjahan, 26, son of Zakir Hossain, of Kusumpura village of Patiya upazila.
