Unb, Dhaka
The International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) and US humanitarian organisation AmeriCares will jointly launch a Global Cholera Preparedness programme to prevent thousands of deaths over the next two years worldwide. The technical expertise of ICDDR,B combined with appropriate medical supplies and AmeriCares' emergency response capabilities would facilitate timely and effective responses to cholera outbreaks. Curt Welling, president and CEO of AmeriCares, said this initiative will allow us to respond rapidly in the crucial first stages of cholera outbreaks and save thousands of lives in some of the world's poorest places. “With proper treatment, 99 percent of cholera patients will survive,” he said. AmeriCares has been responding to emergencies all over the globe for nearly 30 years while ICDDR,B has 50 years of expertise in responding to cholera epidemics. Now an emergency cholera response team of the ICDDR,B is providing its help to famine-hit people to fight cholera in Somalia.
