Consider migration issue as dev agenda

Speakers tell int'l seminar at AUW

International speakers yesterday called for addressing issues concerning migration problems, including taking measures by framing the issue in a development agenda, strengthening adaptation through migration, developing capacities and international cooperation. They made the call at a two-day long conference on “Changing nature of forced migration: Vulnerabilities and responsibilities in South and Southeast Asia” that kicked off at Asian University for Women (AUW) in the port city. The beginning session of the conference's first day focused on “Climate change, development and security.” Professor Lakshman Dissanyake from Sri Lanka, Dr Francois Gemenne from France, and Meng Xiangjing from China presented different papers during the session. During the second session focused on “Legal and policy framework,” Dr Uttam Kumar Das from Bangladesh presented a paper on the problems in refugee management in the country. Melissa Jean-Brousseau from Canada and Dr N Ajith Kumar from India also presented papers during then. During the third session on “Gender discriminations of forced migration and migrant work”, papers were presented by Mohammad Rafique Wassan from Pakistan and Dr Vandana Asthana from the USA. Earlier in the introductory session, Professor Georgia S Guldan, acting dean of Biological Science in AUW, delivered the welcome speech. Roundtables and photo exhibitions were also held after the day's sessions. The conference's second day will start 8.00am today.
