Climate Change Impacts
Fund from rich nations demanded
An alliance of 50 environmental organisations yesterday demanded adequate fund from the industrialised nations and its transparent use to tackle the fallouts of climate change in Bangladesh.
The people in the country's southern coastal region likely to be hit heavily by climate change should be compensated through arrangement of their migration to other countries, it said.
The alliance, which is part of a global green alliance titled “350.org”, pressed the demand organising a rally in front of the city's Central Shaheed Minar, says a press release of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (Bapa).
“350.org” is running a global movement called "moving people, moving planet".
The organisations demanded the developed world assist Bangladesh with funds and technologies in recovering its river network, and an adaptation research centre be set up in the country at the initiative of the UN.
The speakers said a large amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by vehicles, factories, and household items is one of the most harmful elements for people and the environment.
They mentioned the amount of carbon existing in the atmosphere is 387 parts per million (ppm), which, according to scientists, is way over the limit of 350 ppm. They emphasised that to save the planet, the carbon presence should be brought down to 350ppm.
The alliance's other demands include stopping production of carbon gas and preventing climate change through climate-friendly behaviour.
Advocate Talukder Md Younus MP; Dr Nitish Chandra Debnath, former vice-chancellor of Chittagong Veterinary University; and Prof ATM Nurul Amin, a dean of North South University; among others, addressed the rally.
