<i>'Care for developing young minds'</i>
Love and care is required for better development of young children and not physical assault, children said at a rally yesterday.
Celebrating 'World Meena Day', a rally with the theme "Care works better than punishment" was held in front of National Museum at Shahbagh in the city, said a press release.
Ministry of Social Welfare, Department of Social Services, Unicef and Aparajeyo Bangladesh organised the rally discouraging guardians from using physical beating to discipline the children.
Physical punishment often hampers a child's mental growth and intelligence, said speakers at the rally.
As part of the day's celebrations, daylong activities such as quiz programmes in school, interactive popular theatre show and screening of Meena cartoon was organised by Aparajeyo Bangladesh and Dusto Shasto Kendro.
Meena is a fictional character created by Unicef in 1991. The character was created to bring child rights especially that of female children to forefront of the society. Child rights in the areas of education, health, safety, physical punishment and many others are accounted under the Meena project.
Representatives from Unicef, Dusto Shasto Kendro, Aparajeyo Bangladesh's Child Help Line project, Karmojibi Shishu project and Protection of Children at Risk project as well as many children attended the rally.
