Sangram editor freed
The editor of the Dainik Sangram was freed yesterday on bail after four days of his arrest in connection with the violence on September 19 in the capital.
Officials of Dhaka Central Jail confirmed that a Metropolitan Magistrate granted Abul Asad's bail against a bond of Tk 5,000 and he was freed directly from the court custody at around 5:00pm.
Rapid Action Battalion arrested him from his Moghbazar residence early hours of September 20 for his alleged connection with the clashes between law enforcers and Jamaat-e-Islami men in Dhaka and elsewhere on September 19.
Monirul Islam, deputy commissioner of Detective Branch (South), said the editor of the Dainik Sangram was the only person who was granted bail and freed among around 250 persons who were arrested on September 19 and 20 following the violence.
Jamaat men including its acting Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam and Publicity Secretary Tasneem Alam are also among the arrestees.
During the violence, around 100 people, including 50 policemen, were injured, 28 vehicles were torched and many roadside shops were vandalised when several hundred Jamaat activists clashed with police demanding release of their top leaders who are behind bars on war crimes charges.
Nine cases were filed with Ramna and Paltan Police Stations for torching and damaging vehicles, destroying public properties and attacking policemen.
Talking to The Daily Star, DC-DB (South) Monirul Islam said police already took 244 Jamaat-Shibir men on remand and police found that the violence by Jamaat-Shibir on September 19 was planned following a decision of Jamaat high command.
He also said several hundred cadres and criminals were hired from different districts for the attacks and the attackers used various explosives and weapons.
