Alleged mugger beaten

A mob beat an alleged mugger and recovered a foreign pistol and two bullets from him in front of Babu Bazar rice market in Old Dhaka yesterday. Police admitted the arrested Mohammad Raja, 25, to Mitford Hospital after recovering him and the weapon. Witnesses said Rakib, a shop employee, was on a rickshaw carrying Tk 5 lakh in a bag around 2:00pm when three muggers appeared, fired two blank shots and tried to snatch the bag. On hearing the shots and Rakib's cries, the locals gave chase and managed to catch Raja, they said. Rapid Action Battalion members took Rakib away to interrogate and find where he was taking the money, said Officer-in-Charge Salahuddin Khan of Kotwali Police Station.
