PM's 'peace model' brightens image

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to the United States, coinciding the 66th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), has helped brighten further Bangladesh's image as well as boosting ties with the US and other countries in the areas of trade and business. Sheikh Hasina's peace model presented in the UNGA stirred the world leaders to rethink about the global peace and integrate the development issues with multidimensional democracy with social responsibilities. During the UNGA session, she was honoured with South South Award by UN Economic Commission for Africa, Permanent Mission of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations, International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and South South News in recognition to her relentless efforts to build the country as a digital one. Noted diplomat and former foreign secretary Faruq Choudhury told the news agency that the peace model, the prime minister presented at UN General Assembly, is very pertinent for Bangladesh. "The model is also very relevant for other countries aspiring for peace and development," he said. FBCCI President AK Azad, who accompanied the PM during the visit, said US business community highly praised Sheikh Hasina's outlook for global peace. Sheikh Hasina took the opportunity to further cementing the ties with the US through her meetings with US President Barack Obama, US chamber leaders and Congressmen. While meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and UNGA President Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, she affirmed her commitment to UN peacekeeping and peaceful coexistence in the world. She also held meetings with Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma and heads of states and governments of different countries during her stay in New York. On the sidelines of the UNGA session, Sheikh Hasina attended a number of events organised by the UN secretary-general on counter-terrorism, communicable disease, women empowerment and food security other than a series of bilateral meetings. The Prime Minister delivered a keynote speech in a symposium organized by the UN secretary-general on 'Counter-terrorism' where she renewed her steadfast stance against terrorism and called for a universal agreement on legal definition of terrorism. In a dialogue on climate change sponsored by present and next chairs of the Conference of Parties (COP) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Sheikh Hasina reiterated her call to the world leaders to include climate-induced displacement issue in the future international framework to address its impact on development and social order.
