Roads to be repaired before Eid

Says Abul Hossain

All major roads and highways will be readied for smooth traffic before holy Eid-ul-Azha after repair works nationwide, said Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain yesterday. "The present condition of roads and highways is largely a blatant result of the corruption and negligence by the BNP-Jammat alliance government that used cheap and sub-standard materials for both repairs and constructions," he said while visiting the renovation works of Dhaka-Mymensingh road at Mouna intersection. Abul Hossain alleged that the works that were going on in Dhaka-Mymensignh road was not a repair work. "Instead, it should be called reconstruction," he said in an oblique reference to malpractice of the past. The minister, however, regretted for the temporary sufferings of the people, but vowed to provide a good road infrastructure and a modern transport system soon across the country, including capital Dhaka. He said the present government would start the work for metro rail in Dhaka during its tenure. Communications Secretary Mozammel Haque Khan and Chief Engineer of Roads and Highways Department Abdul Quddus, among others, were present.
