Feb 7 as sign language day demanded
People with hearing and speech impairment yesterday called upon the government to declare February 7 as the "National Bengali Sign Language Day".
They also demanded education facilities, employment opportunities, and vocational training so that they can be self-dependent.
The call came from a human chain and rally organised jointly by the Society of the Deaf and Sign Language Users (SDSL) and ActionAid Bangladesh in front of the city's Jatiya Press Club. Parents of the special needs people, officials of the NGOs, and others attended the programme.
Iffat Ara Parvin, programme officer of ActionAid Bangladesh, said if the day is declared and observed, people will know about the existence of sign language and its users. “People will also become aware of the rights of the hearing impaired people”, she added.
A movement to press the government for declaring "National Bengali Sign Language Day" was launched in the country in 2008.
