War crimes trial a poll pledge

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said her government has taken initiatives for trial of the war criminals to fulfil its election pledge. She said this when Bangladesh-origin British parliament member Rushanara Ali met her at the Prime Minister Office (PMO). PM's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters after the meeting. The prime minister informed the British lawmaker that the trial of those persons who committed crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation in 1971 is going on. They also discussed climate change issue and Hasina sought British cooperation in implementing climate change mitigation programmes in Bangladesh. She also highlighted various steps her government has already undertaken to combat the adverse impacts of climate change in the country. Hasina said her government is working hard for strengthening democracy and democratic institutions of the country since it assumed office through a free, fair and neutral election held in December 2008. Rushanara highly praised the dynamic and visionary leadership of Hasina and said Bangladesh has achieved tremendous successes in the fields of agriculture, education, health and women empowerment under her eligible and pragmatic leadership. She also praised the present government for taking pragmatic initiatives to face climate change impacts on the country.
