Concern over Khaleda's comment

Eminent citizens in a joint statement yesterday expressed grave concern over the recent comments of the leader of the opposition in parliament on the religious faith of the prime minister. The 27 citizens said criticism is acceptable in a multi-party democracy but taunting anyone's religious beliefs on purpose and attacking the sentiments of the people of different religions is in no way responsible behaviour. They also called upon the nation to remain united on the trial of war criminals and to establish a secular Bangladesh. Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Khaleda Zia, at a rally in Sylhet on Tuesday, questioned the religious beliefs of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The signatories of the statement are Syed Shamsul Haque, Kaium Chowdhury, Dr Khandakar Bazlul Haque, Dr Sarwar Ali, Rahat Khan, Dr Syed Manzurul Islam, Belal Chowdhury, Mahadev Saha, Nirmalendu Goon, Prof Anwar Hossain, Hashem Khan, Nasiruddin Yousuf, Mamunur Rashid, Dr Anwara Syed Haque, Dr Kamrul Hasan Khan, Selina Hossain, Pijush Banerjee, Advocate SM Rezaul Karim, Rabiul Hussain, Golam Kuddus, Dr Muhammad Samad, Prof Shahid Aktar Hossain, Ferdousi Priyovashini, Dr Sanjida Aktar, Shimul Yousuf, Hasan Arif and Engr Abdus Sabur.
