Plan to procure Tk 115cr equipment

The government will procure more equipment costing Tk 115 crore this year for post-disaster rescue and evacuation drives with a view to minimising its loss. “We've already procured equipments worth Tk 70 crore. We'll also procure more evacuation equipment at Tk 115 crore this year to face disasters,” said Food and Disaster Management Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque at a discussion yesterday. The Disaster Management Bureau and the Disaster Management and Relief Division jointly arranged the discussion at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city, marking the International Day for Disaster Reduction-2011. Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr Afsarul Amin, UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Neal Walker, Education Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, former UGC chairman Prof Dr Nazrul Islam, director general of Fire Service and Civil Defence Brig Gen (retd) ANM Shahidullah and Buet Prof Dr Rakib Ahsan spoke at the meeting while Disaster Management and Relief Division Secretary Dr M Aslam Alam presided over it. Speaking as the chief guest, Dr Abdur Razzaque said Bangladesh is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world due to its geographical location where flood and cyclone hit the country every year. As the poor become the worst victims of any natural disaster, the main objective of the government is to enhance their standard of livelihood to cope with the disasters, Dr Razzaque said. He said earthquake is the most devastating disaster in the world and Bangladesh is vulnerable to earthquake. Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr Afsarul Amin stressed bringing children and youths under the disaster management programme to address the natural disasters and man-made disasters.
