Halts traffic on Dhaka-Aricha highway
Six people were killed and 17 others injured in separate road accidents in Manikganj, Kushtia and Chittagong yesterday.
Our Manikganj correspondent reports: Transport movement on the Dhaka-Aricha highway remained suspended for two-and-a-half-hour yesterday morning following a road accident in the district that killed one and injured another.
Witnesses said a CNG-run ambulance heading for Faridpur caught fire after a Dhaka-bound bus of Shohag Paribahan rammed it near Naya Rishipara Bridge of Saturia upazila around 8:00am.
Fire fighters rushed to the spot and doused the fire. They found the charred body of Ronny, 18, helper of the ambulance, inside the vehicle, which was also badly burned, police said.
The injured driver of the ambulance was admitted to Savar Gonoshasthaya Kendra.
Transport movement came to a halt after the accident as the damaged ambulance blocked the highway.
The traffic situation became normal around 10:30am after a wrecker removed the ambulance from the highway.
Our Kushtia correspondent adds: Three people were killed and 16 others injured as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch on the Gangni-Kathuli road in Gangni upazila.
The deceased are Reza Ahmed, a class VIII student of Shandhani School and College, and son of Abdul Khaleq of Shaharbati village in the upazila, Tahazuddin, 56, of Shibpur village of Sadar upazila and Mona, 17, the helper of the bus.
Meanwhile, a schoolboy was killed on the spot when a bus of Akash Paribahan ran him over while he was coming back home after attending private tuition on the Kushtia-Doulatpur road at Kaipal village of Doulatpur upazila.
The deceased is Abdul Aziz, son of Abdul Kuddus, and a class three student of Pragpur Primary School in the village.
Staff correspondent from Chittagong says: Two people, including an elderly woman, were killed in separate road accidents in the port city yesterday.
The deceased is CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver Abul Basar, 35 and Jamila Khatun, 65, of New Rajapur union of Sitakunda.
Basar was killed when he lost his control over the auto-rickshaw and hit a roadside tree at at Alimpur in Hathazari.
Jamila was killed as a trailer truck hit her from behind on the Kumira bypass road at Sitakunda upazila.
