Eye care for drivers to cut accidents urged

In observance of the World Sight Day 2011, a billboard on Dhaka Urban Comprehensive Eye Care Project was unveiled yesterday to mobilise people towards eye care service. Prominent film star and Chairman of Nirapad Sarak Chai movement, Ilias Kanchan, unveiled the billboard on the Islamia Eye Hospital premises in the city. Dhaka Urban Comprehensive Eye Care Project (DUCECP) developed the billboard, says a press release. Addressing the ceremony, Ilias Kanchan stressed the need for adequate eye care services for all especially for the transport workers to reduce the frequency of road accidents. The function was also addressed by Bitopi Das Chowdhury, head of Corporate Affairs, Standard Chartered Bank; Zahida Ispahani, adviser; Dr Steven Roy, chief executive officer; Dr Alamgir Hossain, management consultant of Islamia Eye Hospital; and Md Rafiqul Islam, senior project manager, Sightsavers; among others. DUCECP project coordinator M Nurun Nabi moderated it. DUCECP is providing eye care to the slum dwellers and disadvantaged people in the city. So far it has provided the service to more than 300,000 people and conducted 37,000 cataract operations.
