Suicide largest contributor to adolescents' mortality

Suicide is the single largest contributor to mortality among adolescent girls (15-19 age group) in Bangladesh as 21 percent of the deaths occur due to committing suicide, reveals a study. Over 40 percent of the female who commit suicides in Bangladesh belong to 20-29 age group, it says. The research titled "Study on Suicide Ideators and Attempts amongst Bangladeshi Adolescents" was revealed at a seminar in the city on Thursday. MRC-Mode, a social and market research company, conducted the research examining causes of death of 28,298 women in Dhaka, Gazipur, Madaripur and Jhenidah. General Manager of MRC-Mode Shireen Abedin presented the findings. Clinical Psychologist Dr Mehtab Khanam, Dr Mahbuba Nasreen and Dr Sheikh Hafizur Rahman, teachers of Dhaka University, among others, were present.
