Eminent jurist Barrister Rafique-ul Huq yesterday demanded setting up of a separate court that would dedicate itself for establishing human rights in the country. Without a separate court, the human rights commission and law cannot be made effective, he said, adding that people have to approach the High Court, as the National Human Rights Commission holds no power to give them relief when their rights are violated. Rafique-ul Huq was speaking at the 7th anniversary celebration programme of the daily Amar Desh on Jatiya Press Club premises in the city yesterday. The lawyer alleged that the editor and a reporter of the Amar Desh fell victim to human rights violation through the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court though the newspaper has been fighting for establishing human rights in the country. The two served in jail due to an order of the Appellate Division, he said. Amar Desh Editor Mahmudur Rahman said his newspaper has been struggling against human rights violation, and it will continue the fight even if BNP comes to power in future. BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir informed the programme that the party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, urges all to participate in the struggle for protecting human rights, as democracy and human rights have become jeopardised in the country. Supreme Court Bar Association President Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Prof Talukder Moniruzzaman, and Prof Mahbub Ullah, among others, spoke on the occasion.
