Bangladesh's Allegation

Malaysia to stop organ trafficking

Star Report
Malaysia takes a serious view of Bangladesh's allegation that certain hospitals in the country are involved in trafficking in human organs, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, reports Malaysian national news agency Bernama. Liow said Malaysia is committed to eradicating human organ trafficking activities, which is against medical ethics and humanity values. "We have made a police report and we hope the police would help us investigate the matter as we need to state our stand clearly. Malaysia does not support any international organ trafficking," he told a press conference after opening the 2011 national-level organ donation awareness week campaign at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, yesterday. On the same subject, Liow said the government would not encourage Malaysians to go abroad to obtain organs commercially without the ministry's approval. Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar, who was also present at the event, said investigations would be carried out on the matter.
