A parliamentary body yesterday came down heavily on the managing director of Biman Bangladesh Airlines and top officials of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) for poor performance in running Biman and CAAB. Some members of the parliamentary standing committee on civil aviation and tourism ministry even personally attacked Biman Managing Director Muhammad Zakiul Islam and the officials, meeting sources told The Daily Star. “You are performing your job inefficiently,” said the committee member Mayeen Uddin Khan Badal while pointing at Zakiul, as quoted by the sources. “The national flag carrier is flying in a bad shape but you could not take effective measures to get rid of the situation,” he said. Talking to reporters, lawmaker Badal of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, said the committee had been raising the issue of bad performance for the last few years but nothing had changed. Civil Aviation Minister GM Quader, another member of the committee, at the meeting also criticised the top officials of CAAB. They are more attentive to other jobs than to their respective ones, he said. Some of the members pointed out corruption in Biman especially in appointing general sales agreement in overseas countries, as in Oman, and in leasing a Boeing 747 for Hajj flights. The meeting was held at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with Engineer Mosharrof Hossain in the chair.
