'Constitute two separate benches for Appellate divn'

Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Khandker Mahbub Hossain urged the chief justice to constitute two separate benches for the Appellate Division of Supreme Court to dispose of more cases quickly. It is very much possible to constitute at least two benches with the eight brilliant judges at present, including Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain, in the interest of litigants and lawyers, he said. Talking to The Daily Star at his SCBA office recently, Mahbub said over 11,000 cases are now pending at the Appellate Division and this number is increasing due to delay in case disposal. The single bench of Appellate Division comprised of the eight judges is functioning for a long time but cannot increase the number of cases it hears and disposes in a day, he said. Mahbub said SCBA leaders met the chief justice earlier and put forward this request several times, which the chief justice assured of doing so. “We saw in the past that two benches were constituted for the Appellate Division when the number of judges was only five or six. “I cannot understand why the chief justice did not constitute two benches,” he said.
