Freedom fighters and families yesterday urged the government to build the "Bir Sreshtha Chattar" (square) within shortest possible time in the memories of the country's seven bravest sons who laid down their lives in the liberation war of 1971. “We are drawing government's attention to implement the Chattar project quickly so that no vested quarter can hinder the project”, Mili Rahman, widow of Bir Sreshtha Matiur Rahman, said at a press conference. Following a long-standing demand of the families of the freedom fighters and of different organisations, the government said on October 12 that it had decided to build the square at the southeast corner of Chandrima Uddan in the city. Mili Rahman, also president of Bir Shrestho Matiur Rahman Foundation, expressed gratitude to the government for taking the decision to build the memorial square. She said it was regretful that no initiative had been taken at government or non-government level to bring up the lives and works of the Bir Sreshthas collectively. The foundation organised the press conference at the city's Dhaka Reporters Unity yesterday where they also put the demand for speeding up the war crimes trial. General Secretary of the foundation Mohammad Emdadul Haque, Chief Executive Officer Md Mamun Khan, and Assistant Secretary Roji Kuddus were present among others.
