Traders in the district town yesterday took to the streets protesting 'unruly and violent' activities of Chhatra League (BCL) activists. All the shops kept their shutters down for 2 hours from 10:00am. The traders also gave a 48-hour ultimatum to the administration to arrest the BCL activists who damaged shops and vehicles on Tuesday night. We will go for tougher movement if our demands are not met immediate, they said. Earlier, two rival groups of Chhatra League activists locked in a clash at about 9:00pm on Tuesday. The unruly youths vandalised 7 shops and damaged three vehicles during the period. They also assaulted some traders at their shops, witnesses said. Sources said, Tuesday's clash between Chhatra League activists was an outburst of intra-party conflicts. Five Chhatra League activists were injured in the clash. Of them, two were admitted to hospitals. Immediately after the clash, the traders came out of their shops to start agitation. At night, they called an emergency meeting where they announced a two-hour strike yesterday at shops, medicine stores, hotels and restaurants. A protest rally was held at Chowmuhana Square yesterday morning. Later, the traders gave memorandums to the deputy commissioner (DC) and police superintendent (SP) demanding security of business establishments in the town and arrest of the culprits. Amulya Kumar Chowdhury, officer-in-charge (OC) of Moulvibazar Sadar Model PS said, police have already arrested 11 people in connection with Tuesday night's clash.
