Treatment of physical pain

Physical pain mainly originated from musculo-skeletal (muscle and bone) system is a threat for both male and female. People in the age group between 30 to 60 are suffering most. Pain in back and neck are the commonest. Almost everybody has experienced back pain in his/her life cycle. In many instances, pain treatment can be accomplished through physiotherapy. A physiotherapist can use a multitude of techniques to reduce pain, such as massage, ioint mobilisation or manipulation, acupressure or trigger point therapy, ultrasound, interferential therapy. The aim of treatment is not only a complete recovery, but to also ensuring the affected area returns to its full strength and flexibility, which will prevent the problem from recurring. This is particularly appropriate in the treatment of neck and low back pain. Drugs to relieve pain are not always the solution. Physiotherapy, especially therapeutic exercise can reduce nerve root compression, increase blood circulation, nutrition; overall boost up of musculoskeletal system. Physiotherapy has a great role in sports injury, frozen shoulder, knee pain, tennis elbow, heel pain etc. The writer is Consultant and Head, Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Uttara Akhunik Medical College Hospital, Dhaka.
