Protest against acquisition of land for army in Bhatiari

Staff Correspondent, Ctg
Residents of Bhatiari and adjoining areas under Sitakunda upazila yesterday vowed to initiate an agitation programme if the Ministry of Defence does not cancel a recent gazette it issued to acquire their land for the army. The protestors submitted a memorandum to the prime minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong in this regard. Afterwards, they brought out a huge rally that paraded through different city streets and ended in front of Chittagong Press Club where they formed a human chain under the banner of a protest committee. Addressing the human chain, Kamal Uddin Sawdagar, the committee's vice-president, announced that they would lay siege to the residence of Sitakunda's lawmaker on December 17. The acquisition process was held four times since 1958, taking control of around 2,000 acres of their lands. Further acquisition would risk the existence of the local people as the sea is in the south and a highway is in the north, Kamal said.
