Girl kills herself

A teenage girl allegedly committed suicide at Sabujbagh Manda in the city yesterday following humiliation in a village arbitration for getting involved in a love affair. Sabujbagh police said the girl, identified as Shahnaz Parveen, aged about 15, daughter of Alamgir Hossain, a rickshaw garage mechanic, hailed from Tangail Sadar. She has been living with her parents at Lal Miah Road in South Manda since November. Police said they recovered the hanging body of Shahnaz from their house at around 1:00pm yesterday. The parents of Shahnaz were not at home during the incident. Police said the girl left a note saying that she killed herself following humiliation in a village arbitration for getting involved in a love affair with a teenager, Abdul Malek, in her village. The village arbitrators fined the family of Malek Tk 30,000 and forced Shahnaz and her family to leave the village. Shahnaz in her suicide note requested her father to return the money to Malek's father. Police said Alamgir admitted that the arbitrators forced them to leave the village. He, however, did not say anything about the money, police added The body has been sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue for an autopsy.
