Locals vandalised a police camp in Bogra Sadar upazila yesterday in protest at the “camp members' involvement” in a mugging incident in its adjacent areas on Wednesday night. In-charge of the Naruli police camp sub-inspector Aziz Mondal, who had been accused of assaulting the mugging victims, was stand released and attached to Bogra Police Lines after the protest, said Arifur Rahman Mandol, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) of Bogra. The victims rushed to the police camp and informed the law enforcers of the incident. Instead of taking any action, the police personnel led by SI Aziz detained the victims terming them muggers, locals said adding that police also assaulted the four and later released them in the morning. “We were detained inside the camp instead of getting any police help following the complaints,” said Rafiqul, one of the victims. When the news spread, several hundred locals from Sabgram assembled at the police camp around 10:00am, said Rostam Ali, councillor of ward No. 20 of the municipality area. The agitating locals threw brick chips and broke windowpanes of the camp. Ali Akbar, a constable of the police station, told The Daily Star the law enforcers rushed inside the camp to avoid injuries. At least 10 police personnel remained surrounded at the camp. The locals also barricaded the Naruli-Chelopara road for about an hour from 10:00am demanding punishment of the policemen. The situation eased about three hours later when the ASP assured the protesters of proper action against the “culprits”. Contacted, both ASP Rahman and SI Aziz denied the allegation of mugging and assaulting. Locals alleged that policemen of the camp were involved in another incident of mugging in front of the camp a few days ago.
