Ctg modern jail opens today

The expansion and modernisation work of Chittagong Central Jail has been completed recently at a cost of Tk 58 crore after 13 years. Home Minister Sahara Khatun is scheduled to inaugurate the modern jail today. Public Works Department (PWD) started the project in July, 1998 and completed it on June 30 this year. The jail was set up in 1885. The newly expanded jail has the capacity of accommodating 1,715 prisoners against its existing capacity of 1,200, said Jailor Rafiqul Kader Khokan adding there were 4,349 prisoners in the jail yesterday. Sources said some 35 buildings have been constructed on over 16.87 acres area while the buildings house quarters for the prisoners, separate prison cells for the VIP prisoners, work shed, standard rooms for female prisoners and separate cells for juvenile prisoners, a administrative building, a 100-bed hospital, three staff quarters, warden barrack, a office of PWD, ten condemn cells, 32 security cells, residences of the DIG Prison and senior jail superintendent. Necessary infrastructures, including residence for prisoners keeping spacious walking place, bathrooms, entrances, store rooms and meeting place for the prisoners with their relatives, have also been built.
