Govt to make jails correctional centres
Says home minister
Home Minister Sahara Khatun yesterday said the present government is trying to make the jails correctional centres in true sense.
She was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the Project named “Expansion and Modernisation of Chittagong Central Jail” on the jail premises in the port city.
Present government is taking different projects to enhance the facilities for the prisoners through constructing new jail with modern facilities and providing humane education so that they can become better persons after getting freed from confinement, she said.
She urged the jail guards to behave humanely with the prisoners.
The government has initiated a project to construct a training centre for the jail officials at Rajshahi and a jail for the female prisoners at Keraniganj on a land of 194 acres, the minister informed.
Terming Chittagong Central Jail as the second largest jail in the country, she said all the vacant posts of this jail as well as other jails will be filled up through new recruitment very soon.
Sahara said a certain quarter is trying to foil the trial of war criminals and to save the persons who are already identified as corrupt people.
"They are trying to create anarchy in the country to save the war criminals and the corrupt people,” she said and urged all to be united to resist them.
She said no one will be able to foil the trial of war criminals as the people of the country want the trial to be completed.
Awami League lawmaker Nurul Islam BSc and Chittagong district Magistrate Fayez Ahmed also spoke at the ceremony chaired by Inspector General (Prison) Brigadier Gen (Retd) Md Ashraful Islam Khan.
