Road accidents kill 8, injure 42

Eight people, including three women and a child, were killed and at least 42 others injured in separate road accidents in Chittagong, Narsingdi and Madaripur yesterday. Staff correspondent from Chittagong reports: Five people, including three women, were killed and at least 40 others injured when a speeding overcrowded bus hit some pedestrians before flipping into a roadside ditch while the driver of the Chittagong-bound bus from Chandpur lost control over the steering after one of the tyres of the bus burst on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Uttar Masjidda area at Kumira of Sitakunda upazila in the port city yesterday. The deceased were Sumita Rani Dey, 32, Uttam Bishwas, 30, Namita Majumder, 35, Jharna Das Ratna, 40, they worked at Dock Textile Mill, of Uttar Moshjida, and Manir Hossain, 28, passenger of the bus, from Barisal. After the accident, locals, fire fighters from Kumira Fire Station rushed to the spot and rescued the injured. The injured were admitted to Sitakunda Health Complex and critically injured were shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Eyewitnesses said the driver was driving the vehicle recklessly ignoring the requests of the passengers. Police said they seized the bus but its driver and helper fled the scene. Our Narsingdi correspondent adds: Two motorcyclists were killed and another was injured when a Dhaka-bound bus hit their motorcycle on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Baraitala area of Shipbpur upazila yesterday. The deceased were Sohrab Hossain, 18, and Jainal, 17, both from Bhelanagar of Narsingdi town. Severely injured Robin, 19, who was also on the motorcycle, was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Our Madaripur correspondent says: A seven-year old child was killed and another child critically injured when a Dhaka-bound speedy bus of Ajmery Paribahan crashed them on the Dhaka-Barishal highway in Tatibari area of Sadar upazila yesterday. The deceased was identified as Rajib Sardar, of the same area. The critically injured child was admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. Following the accident, local people blocked the highway around two-hour.
