5 killed, 20 hurt in road crashes

Five people were killed and 20 others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Sirajganj and Rangpur on Saturday. Staff correspondent reports: Three motorcyclists were killed when a truck hit their bike on the Dhaka-Mawa Highway at South Keraniganj on the outskirts of the capital yesterday. Brickfield owner Babul Munshi, 42, of Sirajdikhan in Munshiganj, his nephew Dulal Matbar, 32, also the manager of the brickfield, and Uzzal Hossain, 22, the driver of the motorbike, met the tragic end of their life while traveling to Dhaka from Munshiganj. Shakhawat Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of South Keraniganj Police Station, told The Daily Star that a Mawa-bound rice-laden truck hit their bike when they reached Rajendrapur area at around 1:30pm. “Dulal and Uzzal died instantly while Babul succumbed to his injuries at 3:30pm while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital,” said the OC adding police seized the killer truck which also damaged the motorbike but its driver managed to flee leaving his vehicle on the road. Babul's cousin Nur Hossain said the accident took place when Babul accompanied by Dulal and Uzzal was on way to visit his 15-year-old daughter Habiba Akhter, who is a residential student of a female madrasa. Our Sirajganj correspondent says: One person was killed and five others were injured when a microbus carrying a bridal party hit a truck from behind on west approach road of the Bangabandhu Bridge at Konabari in Kamarkhand upazila on Saturday night. The victim was identified as Golam Mostafa, of Garadah village in Shahzadpur upazila. Of the injured, the groom Rabiul Islam and bride Akhi Khatun, Fahad bin Habib and Ashraf Ali, were admitted to Sirajganj General Hospital. In another incident, a bus and truck collided head-on in the same area and same night, leaving five people injured. Our Rangpur correspondent adds: Dulal Mian, 40, of Moynakuri village in Badarganj upazila, was killed and ten others were injured as a passenger bus rammed a Bhutbhuti (three-wheeler) at Changmary in Badarganj upazila on Saturday afternoon. The injured were taken to Badarganj Upazila Health Complex.
