FFs vow to help war crimes trial
Thousands of freedom fighters pledged before the Shikha Chironton (eternal flame) in the city's Suhrawardy Udyan yesterday to assist the government in realising their hopes about the war crimes trial's completion by December 2012.
The oath-taking ceremony, organised by Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command Council, was held at the end of a colourful procession beginning from Bangabandhu Memorial Museum on Road 32 Dhanmondi and parading through Science Lab and Shahbagh.
Addressing the rally as the chief guest before administering the oath, State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Capt (retd) AB Tajul Islam said the leader of the opposition in parliament was trying to save her sons and the war criminals by creating instability in the country.
The opposition leader's plan would not succeed, he said. “The trial of the war criminals will be held as long as there is life in a single freedom fighter.”
The council president, Maj Gen (retd) Helal Morshed, hinting at the opposition leader, said, “I detest those who are trying to create doubts over the trial and distorting the history of the War of Liberation.”
One minute's silence preceded the oath-taking ceremony to pay tribute to the martyrs of 1971, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family and the recently deceased veteran Awami League leader Abdur Razzak.
