Kakrail Violence
Hearing on Jan 15
A Dhaka court yesterday fixed January 15 for the hearing on charge framing against 161 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir in connection with a case filed in connection with the violence in the city's Kakrail area.
The court set the new date as the jail authorities failed to produce the accused before it yesterday.
Of the accused, Jamaat acting secretary general ATM Azharul Islam and 154 other Jamaat and Shibir men are in custody while acting ameer Maqbul Ahmad and five others have been absconding.
Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Nur of the Speedy Trial Court-14 also directed the jail authorities to produce the detainees before it on the scheduled date.
On September 19 last year, several hundred Jamaat activists clashed with police in Kakrail, Bijoynagar and Shantinagar areas, leaving at least 100 people injured, setting fire to at least 28 vehicles and smashing over 200 others. They vandalised dozens of roadside shops and halted traffic for hours.
Two cases were filed with Paltan and Ramna police stations on charges of assaulting police, interrupting traffic movement and creating anarchy.
