10 killed, 55 hurt in road crashes

Ten people were killed and 55 others injured in separate road accidents in Natore, Joypurhat, Gaibandha, Mymensingh, Patuakhali and Lalmonirhat early Sunday and yesterday. Our Natore correspondent reports: Two members of a family were killed and two children injured when a fertiliser-laden truck skidded off Natore-Bogra Highway and crashed into a roadside house at Balubhora in Singra upazila at about 5:00am yesterday. Fayesur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Singra Police Station, said the accident occurred when the family members were asleep. Fahima Begum, 22, and her sister Lily Khatun, 19, daughters of Malu Sardar, died on the spot. The injured Fahima's son Shafiqul Islam, 7, and sister Seema Khatun, 5, were admitted to Singra Upazila Health Complex. Police seized the truck but the driver and helper managed to flee. In another accident, truck driver Zahurul Islam, 28, son of Aychand Ali, of Singra upazila was killed on the spot when the truck fell into a ditch beside Natore-Pabna Highway at Kadamchilan in Lalpur upazila around 6:30am yesterday. Our Dinajpur correspondent says: Schoolboy Rakib Ahmed, 13, son of Akbar Ali of Katla-Benipur village of Birampur upazila, was killed and his brother injured when a shallow-run three-wheeler hit their bicycle carrying them in Panchbibi municipality area of Joypurhat yesterday afternoon. The critically injured Razu Ahmed, 15, was taken to Joypurhat Modern Hospital. Staff correspondent from Chittagong adds: A man was killed and two others were injured as an unidentified truck rammed a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Chittagong-Kaptai road at Badupara in Raozan upazila at around 11:00am yesterday. The deceased is Shamsul Alam, 50, hailing from Majhipara village of the upazila. Gaibandha correspondent says: Two people were killed and 20 others sustained injuries as a Dhaka-bound coach collided head-on with another coach on Bogra-Rangpur Highway at Boalia in Gobindaganj upazila yesterday morning. The deceased are Liton Mia, 30, son of Abdul Goffer, of Giridharipur village in Palashbari upazila and Moni Akhter, 28, wife of Mamun Mia of Nakai village in Gobindaganj upazila. The injured were admitted to Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex. Of them, Farhad, 30, Mahbuber, 25, and Jonaki, 35, were shifted to Bogra Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. In Mymensingh, school teacher Ariful Islam, 29, son of Abdul Hekim of Kewatkhali in the town, was killed when a Dhaka-bound bus rammed a private car from the opposite direction on Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at Baghan in Trishal upazila at around 11:30am yesterday. In Patuakhali, Sujon Biswas, 30, of Ujirpur upazila in Barisal, was killed and 30 others were injured when a bus skidded off the Barisal-Patuakhali Highway after in Moukaran Bridge area in Dumki upazila at about 9:30am yesterday. The injured were admitted to Patuakhali General Hospital. In Lalmonirhat, Jahangir Alam, 45, son of late Idris Ali of Kaliganj upazila, was killed as a bus hit his motorbike on Lalmonirhat-Burimari road at Kashiram of the upazila at around 8:30pm on Sunday night.
