Road March

BNP memo to CMP not to arrest leaders

Staff Correspondent, Ctg
Chittagong city unit BNP yesterday submitted a memorandum to Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) commissioner urging not to "arrest or harass" its leaders and activists ahead of a road march and a rally in the port city. BNP mentioned in the memorandum that a section of people is trying to foil the road march to be attended by its Chairperson Khaleda Zia. The party also sought cooperation from DMP to hold the programmes peacefully at Railway Pologround on January 9. BNP also demanded legal action against those who allegedly stole billboards and tore banners and posters on the road march in the city. A team of BNP leaders, including BNP city unit General Secretary Dr Shahadat Hossain, Vice President Abu Sufian and Shamsul Alam, led by BNP lawmaker Jarful Islam Chowdhury submitted the memorandum at around 11:00am. It alleged that an arch built before the resident of BNP city unit President Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury was set on fire and posters and digital banners were torn down. Asked, CMP Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam, however, termed the allegation of arresting or harassing BNP activists "false". Refuting the allegation, Awami League city unit General Secretary Kazi Inamul Hoque Danu, however, blamed BNP for making issues using the road march.
