BCL locks CU admin bldg for rivals' arrest
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists of Chittagong University (CU) unit yesterday locked the administration building for half an hour while submitting a memorandum to the vice-chancellor (VC) demanding the arrest of some alleged rival faction activists.
In the memo submitted to VC Prof Md Anwarul Azim Arif, the BCL men alleged Rakib Hossain and Shihabun Sakib Bhuiyan, both students of zoology department, as killers, arms-hoodlums, drug-peddlers and extortionists and demanded their arrest within 24 hours along with exemplary punishment.
Led by CU unit BCL President Mamunul Hoque, the unit men also threatened to go for tougher movement if their demand was not met.
The move came following a clash Sunday night allegedly between the supporters of the unit president and those of Rakib and Sakib in front of Shahjalal Hall that left three injured, said campus sources.
Of the injured, Jahangir Alam of Islamic history and culture department is now undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital while Abu Tayeb Sumon of public administration department and Saidul Islam of finance department were given first-aid, said Inspector Mizanur Rahman (in-charge) of the university police outpost.
However, terming the allegations brought against them baseless, Sakib said the unit president is conspiring against them to establish dominance on the campus.
Witnesses said BCL men locked the administration building gates around 1:00pm and, later, opened the gates themselves.
Mamunul referred to this gesture as a 'token protest'.
Contacted, CU Proctor Dr Mohammad Nasim Hasan said stern action will be taken against the wrong doers.
