Eight killed in road crashes

Eight people were killed and six others injured in separate road accidents in Bogra, Savar, Rajshahi, Kishoreganj, Lalmonirhat and Joypurhat yesterday. Staff correspondent from Bogra reports: Three people were killed and three others injured in road accident on Bogra-Rongpur Highway at Baghopara area in the sadar upazila yesterday afternoon. The deceased are Samsuddin, 70, Akbar Prodhan, 70, and Panna Mia, 30. The injured were admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. Police said the accident occurred when a taxicab hit the passer-by Samsuddin and then a standing three-wheeler carrying five passengers. JU correspondent reports: A college student was killed and two others injured as their motorbike hit a rickshaw-van on Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Savar around 10:00am yesterday. The deceased is Md Rahatul Islam Nayan, 17, a student of Jahangirnagar University School and College, son of Zakir Hosen Mortuza, of Roalia area in Savar. The injured are Md Habibur Rahman Rubel, 18, and Md Iftekhar Rawnak, 17, intermediate first year students of the same college. Ashulia police said the accident occurred when Nayan, who was riding the bike, lost control over the vehicle and hit a wood-laden rickshaw near Prantik Gate of the university. Nayan succumbed to his injuries at Savar Enam Medical College Hospital while Rubel were undergoing treatment at the hospital and Rawnak at the university's medical centre. Staff correspondent from Rajshahi adds: A schoolboy was crushed under the wheels of a truck on Rajshahi-Natore Highway at Jhalmalia in Puthia upazila at around 9:30am yesterday. The deceased is Limon Ghosh, 6, a class-I student of Jhalmalia Government Primary School. The angry students of the school blocked the road for one-and-half hours demanding a speed breaker on the spot. In another incident, Ashim Kumar Malakar, former deputy director of Department of Agriculture Extension, Chapainawabganj, was killed as a Rajshahi-bound truck rammed his motorbike in Talaimari area in the city at around 3:00pm yesterday afternoon. Our Kishoreganj correspondent says: Iten Mia, a class-VI student, son of Jamal Mia, of Borshikura village in Hossainpur upazila, was critically injured when a motorbike hit him on Kishoreganj-Hossainpur highway in Mastarbari area of the upazila yesterday. Our Lalmonirhat correspondent reports: Mokhlema Begum, 47, wife of Tomir Ali, of the sadar upazila, was killed on the spot when a truck ran over her on Rangpur-Kurigram road at Selimnagar in the sadar upazila yesterday morning. Our Dinajpur correspondent adds: Anil Chandra Rabidas 35, son of Indra Mohon Rabidas, of Panchbibi upazila, was critically injured as a shallow-run three-wheeler hit him on Panchbibi-Joypurhat road in the upazila of Joypurhat yesterday morning. He succumbed to his injuries at Joypurhat Modern Hospital.
