66 BNP men get bail

Sixty-six BNP leaders and workers, including former lawmaker Ilias Ali, were granted two months' anticipatory bail yesterday in six separate cases in connection with the violence in Sylhet and Sirajganj on December 18. All the accused, including Ilias Ali, appeared before a High Court bench seeking bail in the cases. The HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice Shahidul Karim granted the bail after hearing 10 separate bail petitions moved by the accused on January 1. The police filed five cases with different police stations in Sylhet and another with a Sirajganj Police Station against them on December 18 last year following the incident of violence in the respective areas. Barrister Mahbubuddin Khokon and some other pro-BNP lawyers appeared for the accused, while Deputy Attorney General Khandaker Diliruzzaman represented the government.
