A housewife, who received burn injuries mysteriously in Gazipur three days ago, succumbed to her injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday. Police and the victim's husband gave contradictory statements about setting fire to victim Romana Akter, 27. Husband Monir Hossain, a fish trader in Karwan Bazar, accused Sohel, a friend who pursued Romana romantically, of setting fire to her while police said she committed suicide after Sohel betrayed her. Describing the incident, Monir told The Daily Star that Sohel was a friend of him and they both stayed in Chandupara area of Gazipur. “After Sohel started disturbing her, we moved to Pallabi several months ago,” he said, adding that Sohel continued to pester her. On Sunday, Romana went to Sohel's residence to request him to stop pursuing her. “At one stage of altercation, Sohel poured kerosene on Romana and set her on fire,” Monir said. After which Sohel deserted her in front of Birdem Hospital in the city, he added. Ramna police rescued the badly burnt Romana and took her to Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. With this stance, Romana's family filed a case against Sohel and Mohsin. Police arrested accused Mohsin from Pallabi. However, Officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station Rafiqul Islam quoting Gazipur police said, Romana went to Sohel's residence to confront him about his marriage to another women two months back. At one stage of the argument, Romana set herself on fire, the OC said. Police put Mohsin on two days remand.
