Schoolboy trampled by elephant
A schoolboy was trampled to death by an elephant in the port city on Tuesday.
The boy, Jewel Das, 14, son of Babu Lal Das of Bara Uthan union under the city's Karnaphuli Police Station, was a student of Mariam Ashram High School.
Around 6:30pm on Tuesday, Jewel along with his friends went to Lichutola to see three wild elephants that entered their locality that day.
As one of the boys threw brickbats at an elephant, it got angry and chased the people. In the rush, Jewel fell on the ground and was trampled by the elephant.
On information, forest officials drove the elephants out of the village while Karnaphuli police recovered Jewel's body from the spot.
Local UP Chairman Diderul Alam said these elephants came down from hilly area of Banshkhali upazila. They probably deserted from the flock.
