Punish MPs who repressed journos
Demand media men
Media professionals at a human chain yesterday criticised the lawmakers who have repressed journalists in the last three years and demanded their punishment.
They also called upon all media personnel to unite to prevent repression on journalists.
Progotisheel Shilpa o Ganomadhyam Kormi (progressive cultural personalities and mass media employees forum) organised the programme in front of the Jatiya Press Club protesting assault on a female journalist of Rtv last week by Awami League Lawmaker Kamal Ahmed Majumder.
Condemning the attack, Rokeya Prachi, a cultural personality, said whoever be guilty should be handed down exemplary punishment. She also called for ensuring amiable environment for journalist so that they could do their job properly.
Kamal Ahmed assaulted the female journalist and her team members on January 2 as they went to Monipur school in Mirpur to enquire about an allegation that the institution was charging much higher admission fees than that the government had fixed.
Mentioning that the recent incident proves that journalists, like others, are not safe from repression of public representatives, the speakers sought safety of journalists' life and work.
They also said the lawmaker is trying to divert the incident in various ways by publishing advertisement and forcing students to form human chain programme.
Journalists of different media participated in yesterday's human chain to show solidarity.
